When Alan Wake released back in 2010, it received plenty of praise. A paranormal story filled with twists, weird characters, and an episodic format. It was familiar to anyone with a love of Twin Peaks or The Twilight Zone. The titular writer wasn’t a soldier or an action hero, but a writer with a strange case of amnesia. What transpired over the course of the story was a bizarre, terrifying journey through the recesses of a damaged mind. Alan Wake Remastered manages to bring the original on to today’s platforms, with worthy improvements that allow a new generation to experience an original and enthralling masterpiece.

The game begins with a dream sequence — an opportunity to teach you how combat works without being quite as crass as to just overtly tell you it's a tutorial. Once it's out of the way, the story begins proper: Alan Wake is an author of thrillers suffering from writer's block who travels to a log cabin in Bright Falls, Washington with his wife. She hopes the picturesque surrounding will get his creative juices flowing, and maybe it will, but not in the way she thinks.

Likewise, we have the concept of the entity known as The Darkness. Like the Hiss in Control, it's an all-consuming entity with powers and abilities that are beyond our comprehension and understanding. The antagonist in Alan Wake specifically preys upon artists while using them to enhance their own power; often pitting loved ones against them. It's just that, at the end of the day, it never manifests itself into anything more interesting than the people as well as the occasional inanimate object that it possesses.

Alan Wake isn’t familiar with using weapons. After all, he’s a writer who just wanted a break from busy city living and writing deadlines. Whenever you’re faced with an enemy, shining your flashlight at them rids them of the shadows that surround them. This allows you to fire your gun and finally kill them. Sometimes there’s one or two to take out at the same time. Other times, you’re surrounded by a gang of them, and it can be difficult to escape. Thankfully, you can pull off a perfect dodge to evade them. Also, firing a flare gun can take out two or three at a time if you fire it at the right spot.

The repetition in Alan Wake borders on self-parody at times. Practically every chapter begins with you somehow getting separated from everybody, losing all of your equipment, and finding yourself lost in the woods. It just keeps happening. It gets to the point where, when a chapter begins with you riding in a car to your next destination, you're probably wondering how long it will be before the car is run off the road and you're lost in the woods again, and you'll be right.

Alan Wake Remastered comes with DLC which has a few similar issues. For starters, it reuses locations and enemies from the main game which makes the experience feel a bit stale as a result. Its one saving grace comes from the twist involving the primary antagonist but you're going to have a hard time playing through the DLC if you've come right from completing the main campaign.

For existing fans, this no-frills remaster is the best way to experience the 2010 game on modern consoles, but in 2021, much of the title simply doesn't hold up. Without the benefit of nostalgia, Alan Wake doesn't work as horror because it's not scary, as a thriller because long stretches of the game are fantastically boring, or as an action game because the combat is uninspired and repetitive. There's an interesting central mystery here, but like Alan Wake himself, you'll have to go through hell to find it.
